Tennis elbow

Epicondylitis lateralis humeri

Tennis elbow is an inflammation of the tendon of the muscle that makes the movement of extension (dorsal flexion) of the hand. The most commonly affected muscle is the extensor carpi radialis brevis , which attaches to the outer epicondyle of the humerus and to the base of the 3rd metacarpal bone.

Cause

Despite the name, tennis players are not the people who suffer from this most often. The inflammation of the tendon itself occurs due to the repetitive movements of the hand and elbow. Professions such as cooking, painting, cleaning, making handicrafts, and other activities and sports where there is a repetition of the same movements increase the risk of tennis elbow.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the outer part of the elbow that can spread to the hand.
  • Weakness of the muscles around the elbow and hand.
  • Reduced range of motion.
  • Island.
  • Increased temperature to the touch.
  • Redness.

Treatment

Since it is an inflammation, redness, swelling and severe pain can occur, which is why physical therapy is first started to soothe the tissue. After that, he starts with exercises, without which real rehabilitation can not be carried out. We focus on increasing the strength of the forearm extensors during concentric, static and eccentric contractions. Once tennis elbow occurs, it is very likely that it will come back again, so feel free to contact us so that we can solve this problem in time.
